Join WOU’s flexible online STEM programmes and learn from industry experts.

In today’s fast-paced, AI and technological-driven world, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines are at the forefront of innovation. Recently, Malaysia has begun advancing its National Semiconductor Strategy to become a global hub, aiding in IC Chip Design. The government plans to produce 60,000 high-skilled local engineers to further the national agenda, significantly increasing the demand for a highly skilled science and technology workforce.

Supporting this national goal, Wawasan Open University’s (WOU) Digital Technology and Innovative Engineering Hub offers comprehensive STEM courses to prepare graduates for the challenges of the 21st century. Its programmes are also made more accessible with flexible part-time online courses that would suit working individuals who have to juggle between a full-time job and family commitments, but are interested in career progression through education.

Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Mechatronic System

The Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Mechatronics System is a highly practical hands-on and work-based learning TVET programme developed in collaboration with industry partners. It combines practical skill-building with theoretical knowledge through hands-on labs and immersive industrial internships, focusing on mechanical, electronics and computer engineering principles to conceptualise, create and maintain intricate systems.

The programme offers opportunities to work on cutting-edge technologies such as Robotics, Control Systems, Automation, Internet of Things (IoT) and circuit fundamentals for IC Chip Design, which hone students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills to develop innovative solutions for industry challenges.

Students with an STPM or diploma in related disciplines can apply, while those with an SPM certificate and work experience will be considered through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL A).

Master in Data Science (MDS)

The Masters in Data Science prepares students and elevates their expertise in the rapidly evolving field of data science, offering comprehensive coursework covering key data science fundamentals including predictive analytics and forecasting, consumer behaviour and social model analytics, and deep learning and neural networks.

By the end of the programme, students will have a robust understanding of data science and develop the necessary practical skills for advanced analytical and technical roles in the field.

Students holding a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline are eligible to apply. Those without a data science background must complete two prerequisite courses covering the fundamentals of programming before enrolling.

Master in Philosophy (MPhil)

The Master’s Degree in Philosophy programme is designed for working professionals to take on leadership roles in computing-focused research, with part-time online learning modes available. Students will learn how to conduct in-depth research using credible academic sources, contributing to new knowledge in the computing field.

Upon finishing the programme, students should have a comprehensive understanding and skills in research methods and data analysis in computing, technology, humanities, education and social sciences.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar disciplines with a minimum CGPA of 3.00. Those with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 may be considered, subject to a rigorous internal assessment. Additionally, candidates with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 are eligible if they have at least 5 years of work experience.

Applicants with non-computing Bachelor’s degrees must complete prerequisite courses and have a minimum CGPA of 2.50 with 5 years of work experience.

Master of Science in Smart Manufacturing

This Master’s programme that is also available for part-time online students, prepares graduates for excellence in navigating the transformative technologies of smart manufacturing by cultivating a thorough understanding of intelligent, interconnected manufacturing systems. It is the first multidisciplinary smart manufacturing course in Malaysia, covering the latest advancements in manufacturing technology.

Key learning areas of the programme include AI (Artificial Intelligence), Virtual and Augmented reality in manufacturing, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, manufacturing data analytics, and advanced robotics.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Technology or Engineering. Those with an STPM or diploma in related disciplines with work experience can also apply through APEL A.

Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science

The PhD in Engineering Science is a direct collaboration between industry leaders, integrating academic rigour with hands-on industry experience.

Students will be required to produce an in-depth thesis on topics such as advanced manufacturing technology, robotics and automation, sustainable energy systems, construction management and engineering, data analytics and AI applications in engineering.

With a PhD in engineering, students can apply their research findings to address real-world challenges, pioneering progress in both academia and industry.
