WOU Academy, the executive education arm of Wawasan Open University (WOU), and SPIC International College (SPIC), a leading vocational training centre specialising in beauty and wellness education, have formalised a strategic partnership to create stronger progression pathways and expand professional development opportunities for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) talent.
The collaboration paves the way for SPIC students and alumni to broaden their capabilities beyond their vocational specialisation through WOU Academy’s professional certifications, executive workshops, and short courses in areas such as entrepreneurship and applied artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
A key area of cooperation is the establishment of an articulation pathway for local and international students enrolled in SPIC diploma programmes to progress into WOU’s Professional Certification and accredited degree programmes.
Through WOU’s flexible and stackable learning approach, professional certifications and microcredentials may contribute towards the credit requirements of programmes such as the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Management, Bachelor of Digital Business (Hons), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and other relevant WOU degrees, subject to the candidate’s eligibility. This allows learners to continue building towards higher qualifications while pursuing their vocational training, careers, or entrepreneurial activities.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by WOU Chief Executive and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ts. Dr. Yap Eng Hwa and SPIC Founder and Chancellor Rehneel Leow at SPIC’s headquarters on 28 August 2026.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Yap said the partnership reflects WOU’s commitment to recognising diverse learning pathways and widening opportunities for TVET learners to progress professionally and academically through the University.
“People do not all begin their learning journey from the same place or follow the same path. Some begin with academic study, while others begin by mastering a craft or entering the workforce.
“TVET learners deserve equal recognition and genuine opportunities to advance. We are here to support their progression by building on their hands-on expertise with additional credentials, business knowledge, and management capabilities that can help them move forward professionally,” he said.
Leow said the collaboration would give SPIC students and alumni greater opportunities to broaden their capabilities and career prospects beyond their vocational training.
“TVET education equips students with valuable hands-on skills. Through our partnership with WOU Academy, our learners will have access to additional upskilling opportunities that strengthen their business capabilities, digital competencies, and future career pathways,” she said.
The signing marks another milestone in the well-established collaboration between the two institutions. Since 2025, WOU Academy has worked with SPIC International College to deliver the Executive Certification in Advanced Business Start-up to three cohorts, training more than 100 participants, with the latest cohort completing the programme in June this year.
Under the agreement, both parties will expand executive workshops and short courses in areas such as entrepreneurship and applied AI tools, alongside other programmes to be developed by WOU Academy.
The institutions will also explore dual certification arrangements for SPIC students and alumni who complete WOU Academy’s professional or executive certification programmes, including the possibility of dual-branded certificates and jointly organised graduation activities.
The partnership is expected to widen opportunities for TVET learners in the aesthetics sector to build on their vocational expertise, develop broader professional capabilities, and pursue higher qualifications as they advance in their careers.
