Wawasan Open University (WOU) recently celebrated the success of its April 2026 graduating cohort by hosting a series of simultaneous alumni gatherings at its regional offices nationwide on 25 April.

More than 200 graduates received their qualifications ranging from diplomas and bachelor’s degrees to PhDs, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the University’s academic community. The nationwide events brought together new graduates, returning alumni, and prospective postgraduate learners keen to explore the next stage of their academic journeys.

A key highlight of the gatherings was the preview of WOU’s refreshed Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. Designed for working professionals, the postgraduate pathway enables practitioners to maintain academic momentum while advancing their careers without disrupting current employment.

Balancing Work and Higher Education

At the Ipoh Office, PhD in Education graduate Dr Soon Yik Mean shared that WOU’s flexible learning framework allowed him to bridge deep research with corporate educational strategies.

A proud moment for Dr. Soon as he displays his PhD certificate with Head of Ipoh Office, Keh Eng Tschong.

“The programme challenged me to think more critically, research more systematically, and write more analytically, while continuously linking theory with real-world educational practice.

“A particularly meaningful aspect of the journey was the strong supervisory guidance and supportive academic environment, which helped me navigate each stage of the research process smoothly. My study on the synergies between students’ learning preferences and lecturers’ teaching approaches in Malaysian higher education business studies allowed me to integrate decades of professional experience with scholarly inquiry,” he said.

Meanwhile, in East Malaysia, Wilson Anak Rimbit received his Bachelor of Technology (Hons) in Electronics scroll at the Kuching Office.

Sharing his experience juggling studies with his role as an Engineering Assistant at Sarawak Energy Berhad, he said, “Balancing full-time work and studies meant having almost no weekends. However, studying through the challenges strengthened my resilience, time management, and technical knowledge.”

Wilson (pic) added that achieving this milestone has boosted his confidence and will serve as a major catalyst for his career advancement.

For Lim Tian Hwee, WOU’s programmes have also demonstrated strong potential for regional career mobility. The educator, who completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) at the Johor Bahru Regional Centre, successfully transitioned into an international role despite the demands of his studies.

“What kept me going were the encouragement and honest conversations with university advisors, whose guidance helped me regain direction and confidence. Through this journey, I became more resilient and reflective as an educator,” said Lim, who currently works as a Senior Academic Instructor at the Singapore Institute of Management.

Upskilling for Strategic Leadership

The preview of the updated MBA programme received strong interest from the new graduates looking to add strategic management capabilities to their existing technical skills.

In Penang, Bachelor of Digital Business (Honours) graduate Abdul Kader Saifuddin, described the MBA as a logical next step to blend his creative passion with advanced business analytics and leadership.

“The one-year duration is very appealing to me, especially for a Master’s programme. I look forward to utilising it to further my career in events management and process optimisation consultancy,” he said.

The simultaneous events across all WOU Regional Offices concluded with strong engagement, with many fresh graduates already planning to return to the University to pursue their postgraduate journeys.
