Young Enterprise (YE) Advisors learn to be Mentors

Over 100 professionals from the corporate sector and teacher advisors from the 15 participating secondary schools in Penang attended the Young Enterprise (YE) Advisors’ Workshop at WOU.

WOU co-hosted the workshop with Intel to prepare the advisors on their roles as mentors to the school students – otherwise known as Young Achievers.  The advisors come from diverse backgrounds of engineering, education, business and logistics.

WOU is participating for the first time as a sponsor company where its team of seven advisors, led by marketing manager Poh Leong Tat, will act as consultants to the 25 students of Convent Green Lane.

The other WOU advisors are Lim Yao Han (Corporate Communications), Sharizal Inche Mohamed (Human Resources Department), Tan Chia Yun (Finance Unit), Dr Saravanan Murugeson and Deehbanjli Lakshmayya (School of Business and Administration), and Grace Lau (Educational Technology and Publishing).

The one-day workshop presented a working knowledge of the manufacturing cycle; the task of the Board of Directors; networking opportunities with other advisors; and the YE road map for 2009.

Poh said the chief advisors meet once a month while the team of corporate advisors take turns to sit in at the monthly ‘board’ meetings convened by the respective schools under their care. The students will manage the ‘company’ until its liquidation on August 12th.

“WOU is able to contribute to the development of entrepreneurial skills in students and raise its awareness as a higher education provider,” he said, adding that they can also establish better links with industry players and promote interest in lifelong learning.

Meanwhile Lim said the workshop served to equip participants with the traits of advisors and leadership skills, and taught how to network and also how to motivate the students.
