The second batch of On Campus Learning (OCL) full-time students of Wawasan Open University attended the orientation held at the main campus in Penang today.

Out of the nine students enrolled for the shorter February 2014 semester, six are from Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Management and three from Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Accounting.
Penang Regional Centre (PGRC) Acting Head Teh Kim Kow introduced the Academic Advisors – Dr Chuah Poh Lean, Dr M. Balakrishnan, Yap Li Lian, and Jason Lee Kian Teck from School of Business and Administration; and Rabikha Hasni Suparman from School of Foundation and Liberal Studies – to the students during the opening session.

Meanwhile Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye offered a few helpful pointers for their journey at WOU. “First, form and maintain small study groups from among your course mates, about 3-4 in a group. Secondly, get to know your Academic Advisors and seek their advice. Thirdly, make full use of the Internet-based learning we created for you. Get into the culture of getting information online and accessing WOU’s learning management system, Wawasan2u.”
WOU freshman Melody Lim Chii Wen, from Balik Pulau, Penang led in the oath-taking. Also present were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic-OCL) Prof Mohandas Menon, SBA Dean Prof N V Narasimham, and Registrar Yeong Sik Kheong.
The students also attended briefings on WOU’s regulations and procedures, IT services and facilities, WOU learning management system Wawasan2u, library services, OCL programme details, and on managing campus life.
MELODY TAKES UP MANAGEMENT AT WOU.
Melody Lim Chii Wen, 20, a Management student at WOU, did her STPM at Methodist Boys School, Air Itam and is awaiting her results. “I found out about WOU from my counsellor in MBS, during her briefing on after-STPM programmes. I chose WOU because my relatives and my brother, Edwin Lim, who shall graduate this year in Liberal Studies, recommended this University.”
“I chose Management as I was already doing Business Studies and Economics subjects in STPM. I am interested in HR, and this programme covers it,” she said. Though her mum, a teacher, will be financing her studies, Melody hopes to scores As in her STPM and be eligible for tuition fee rebates from WOU.
ACCOUNTING STUDENT SUBASHINI.
Subashini Tavamany, 22, from Kulim, Kedah holds a Diploma in Accounting obtained from Polytechnic Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah in Kulim, last November. “After I finished my diploma, I didn’t know what to do. My aunty suggested to me to come to WOU as a relative of ours previously did a part-time programme here. Moreover, having an Accounting diploma, I thought it best to pursue a specialised degree in the same field.” Her dad works at Rapid Penang while her mum is a Nursing Sister in Kulim General Hospital.
FAN YIN WEN KEEN ON ACCOUNTING.
The sole OCL student registered by the Ipoh Regional Centre, Fan Yin Wen, 21, received her STPM qualifications from Saint Anthony’s School, Teluk Intan. “I chose WOU because I like the environment and the fees are affordable. I found out about WOU while searching through the Internet for my study options.”
“I’m taking Accounting as I want to become a successful Accountant, earn lots of money and help my mum.” An only child, her mum works as a nanny in Teluk Intan while her dad passed away last July.
