WOU to host public forum on Malaysian Education Policy

WOU, Penang Gerakan and the Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) are jointly organising a public forum to gather feedback on the government’s reversal of learning and teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI).

The forum entitled ‘A Discourse on Malaysian Education Policies: Science and Maths in English as an Option” will be held at the WOU main campus on January 7th from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.

The panellists include PAGE chairperson Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim; WOU’s School of Education, Languages and Communications dean Prof Dr Malachi Edwin Vethamani; and Datin Rohana Weiler, Vice President, Asia Pacific Human Resources, in Agilent Technologies who will provide industry perspective on this Malaysian education policy.

Speaking at the joint press conference at the main campus today, WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye said the forum aims to gather feedback from educationists and interested parties on the option of having the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in the English language.

Prof Ho stressed that the future citizens and technocrats of the country must not just be competent within Malaysia but at the international-level as well in the face of globalisation. He added that the forum in Penang is part of a series of forums that are to be held in other states – Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor – to gather feedback from the public for the progress of education in Malaysia.

She said the forum hopes to offer a fresh perspective which is critical in moving the nation forward in matters of education, adding that the main points raised at the series of forums will be incorporated into a memorandum and later handed over to the Prime Minister.

Others at the press conference were Penang Gerakan Publicity, Information and Communication chief Dr Thor Teong Gee and its Legal and Human Rights chief Baljit Singh, and a representative from the Parent Teacher Association of SK St Xavier Cawangan, Remesh Seth Nair.
