WOU to continue fully online learning until June 30th

PENANG: Wawasan Open University (WOU) will continue with a fully online delivery for its Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode of study until the end of June 2020, even after the Movement Control Order (MCO) is lifted. The University will not have face-to-face lectures or tutorials during this period to ensure the well-being of its students.

WOU Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Prof Lily Chan elaborated, “We will make use of our established ODL virtual learning platforms, student support facilities, and other online conveniences to facilitate the teaching and learning of our students without compromising on quality.”

She stated that WOU’s ODL mode was well positioned to reduce the stress and anxiety of the students about their studies during these uncertain times. “We wish to also protect our students against Covid-19 by keeping their physical interactions and movements to a bare minimum,” she added.

Prof Chan highlighted that WOU, being a pioneer ODL institution in the country, will rely on its deep experience to deliver quality education on technology-based platforms. She stressed, “WOU’s versatile digital learning ecosystem helps students stay connected to their tutors, classes and content, no matter where they are and at their own pace.”

She encouraged learners to use the opportunity to earn credentials towards a degree. She explained that WOU offers micro-credentials where students are able to collect credits for the award of a diploma or degree. In addition, with the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), working professionals can use their experience for entry into WOU to obtain higher qualifications and also earn credit hours.

She clarified that even students who are overseas and unable to return or in isolation can keep up with their learning, without wasting time.

“WOU offers a versatile education in various fields of study to prepare future-proof graduates who can take up the challenges at the workplaces, which are fast evolving in the kind of jobs and the type of skills in demand,” Prof Chan stated.

WOU, as part of its efforts of reaching out to students, is extending support with upgrades in Internet connectivity and the purchase of laptops to facilitate their learning.
Interested learners can call the WOU toll-free careline no. 1-300-888-968 for inquiries of enrolment for the upcoming May and July 2020 intakes, or it they want to pursue micro-credentials.
