WOU team at Relay for Life 2012

About 20 staff of Wawasan Open University (WOU) led by Human Resources director Shirley Khoo and Deputy Registrar Sovindar Kaur joined thousands of people for the Relay for Life event at the Youth Park.

The WOU team lent its support to those who are fighting the battle against cancer and to celebratecancer survivors who have triumphed over the disease. People from all ages and walks of life turned up for their own strong reasons, and they were not deterred by the rain and all the activities proceeded smoothly.

The Penang Chief Minister officiated at the opening and kicked off the event at 6.00pm by joining the cancer survivors in the walkabout around the relay track followed by patients, supporters, volunteers, sponsors and individuals, with some coming from overseas to show their solidarity for the cause.

The cancer patients and the family members of cancer survivors also pledged their support by ‘going bald’ at the charity hair-shaving activity. There were supporters from Kuala Lumpur as well who took part in this affair.

WOU has been participating and supporting the event for the past five years. According to Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye, “WOU has watched this event grow over the years, sending out messages to more and more people, especially those of the younger age group. If young people understand and begin to internalise the important messages of Relay, and start adopting a healthy lifestyle from a young age, then the better are our chances of success as a society in fighting back against cancer.”

A member of the WOU team, Foong Weng Hong, from the Registry remarked,“This is my third time coming for this event and I will definitely volunteer myself for this good cause.”

We record out appreciation to all staff of WOU who came to show their support to the event in the spirit of togetherness and team work.
