The WOU Teachers’ Day Celebration was opened by WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (SPACE) U K Menon. In his welcome speech, Menon expressed his appreciation to teachers for their invaluable contribution to society. He also mentioned that teachers need to be learners and continually grow even as they educate their own students.

The first session for the day was led by Prof Dr Malachi Edwin Vethamani, Dean of SELC. He began the session by tallying the number of years of teaching experience among all present; it was a whopping 458 years. He said there was much that teachers could learn from each other based on their experience and knowledge.

Prof Edwin led the teachers through an introspection session, requiring the teachers to reflect on their teaching styles in relation to multiple intelligences. He said that teachers should also be aware of their students’ learning styles so that maximum learning can take place.

The best slogan was, ‘A teacher is the gateway to wondrous discoveries’ from Hanimah Hasan of SMK (P) Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya. All prize winners were treated with WOU souvenirs.

The teachers had an enjoyable time at the event. Li Sheau Juin from SMK Dato’ Lokman commented, “It is a refreshing change from routine. It’s nice to be recognised for who we are and what we do.”   Teacher Rohana Salleh from SMK Dato Onn added, “We had an invigorating and inspiring session. We are glad WOU is near our homes and schools and hope to be back for some Masters courses.”
