Wawasan Open University (WOU) was proud to lend its support for the 9th consecutive year as a gold sponsor of Relay for Life Penang 2016.

The University also sent a 20-member team this year comprising staff and its on-campus learning, full-time students to participate in the customary walkabout at the Youth Park today. They carried the WOU banner with the message ‘Because Knowledge Saves Lives’ and placards as they joined more than 2,000 people from all ages and walks of life to show their support for the fight against cancer.
The purpose of the ‘Relay for Life – Fighting Cancer Together’ campaign is to help spread four key messages about cancer, and they are: to practise a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of getting cancer; early detection and proper treatment saves lives; many cancers are treatable; and that you are not alone.

STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILY PARTICIPATED FOR WOU.
In his address at the opening of the event, Penang State Executive Councillor for Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Rural Development and Health, Dr Afif Bahardin, remarked that the strong spirit of the Relay will serve to create public awareness about this dreaded disease.
“We are gathered here because we are determined to fight cancer together as a community. With the wonderful example of all our cancer survivors and their caregivers, we can break the fear and the silence that surrounds cancer,” he stated.
He urged more Penangites to join the Relay for Life campaign, and in concluding, declared, “Forward with our fight against cancer!”

Earlier on July 13th, WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye had represented the University at a mock cheque presentation held in Komtar to honour all the major sponsors of the event.
