WOU offers support to former staff

Wawasan Open University and DISTED College together raised close to RM9,000 for former staff Raju Muniandy, more affectionately known as ‘Uncle’ Raju, who is suffering from poor health.

WOU’s Human Resources Department organised a fund-raising and collected RM7,100 from its staff. DISTED did a similar collection and raised RM1,680 at their end.

WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye presented the two cheques to Uncle Raju’s only child, Puvaneswary, during a simple ceremony held at the main campus today. Puvaneswary works as a Library Assistant at WOU.

Uncle Raju, 65, spent almost half his life working in educational institutions, first at DISTED and later joined WOU in 2005 in the initial stages even before WOU’s registration as a university in 2006.

He served WOU faithfully for nine years, where he filled the role of a driver to the founding Vice Chancellor and the current Board of Governors Chairman of WOU, Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Gajaraj Dhanarajan, who incidentally also

founded DISTED. Not surprisingly Uncle Raju was ‘employee No. 2’ of WOU as per his ID number, making him one of the pioneer staff.

Uncle Raju has been plagued with health problems since end of 2013 and is currently undergoing treatment.

“I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your kind contributions. My father and I look at this assistance as a form of encouragement and support for us to stay strong and hopeful. Most important of all, your caring gives us strength,” said Puvaneswary, describing her father as a loving, family man. The money would go towards paying his medical expenses.
