WOU is the newest member of StudyPENANG, a state government agency that was set up to promote Penang as the hub of educational excellence. StudyPENANG seeks to promote the state’s higher learning institutions, leveraging on Penang’s diverse cultures, beautiful beaches, heritage sites, foods and industrial zones.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Educational Technology) Prof Zoraini Wati Abas, speaking at the start of the committee meeting in the WOU main campus today, thanked StudyPENANG and looked forward to working together as a team to further higher education in Penang. She said WOU, with its vast experience in open distance learning (ODL), was happy to share its expertise on how to effectively use online platforms for teaching.

WOU also offers General Education Subjects (MPU) and short courses or micro-credentials, paving the way for students of member institutions to join its industry-relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and to pursue lifelong learning for career advancement.
Meanwhile StudyPENANG executive director Khoo Boo Lim welcomed WOU into the fold. He informed that StudyPENANG has 14 ordinary members – and WOU makes 15 – and two associate members, namely Penang Global Tourism and Clinical Hypnotherapy Practitioners Malaysia (CHPM). The State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin, is the chairman of StudyPENANG.

Among those present at the meeting were Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) head, Jasmine Emmanuel, who is WOU’s point person for StudyPENANG, as well as School of Business & Administration Dean Prakash V Arumugam and School of Education, Humanities & Social Studies Dean Assoc Prof Dr Thomas Chow Voon Foo. Others included Penang Global Tourism manager Darren Ng and DISTED College’s Director of Academic Affairs, Dr Jerry Koay.
StudyPENANG, which is supported by the Penang state government, was formed in 2012 under the aegis of Penang Global Tourism. Among the main markets that StudyPENANG is tapping into are China, India, and ASEAN.
