WOU hosts Emily of Emerald Hill

(28-29 March 2009)

After more than two decades, the endearing Emily of Emerald Hill still never failed to draw crowds, as evidenced in the packed theatre at Wawasan Open University.

Such was the appeal of Malaysia’s longest running local play, when even the pounding rain did little to keep theatre lovers away!

The two-day show at WOU’s main campus by the sea played to packed audiences, many of them fans of the Peranakan matriarch, Emily Gan.

From the moment the curtains parted, Emily commanded the audience’s attention as she recounted her struggles and triumphs, moving seamlessly between the significant moments of her life in a captivating 2-hour monologue.

Slipping into the beaded slippers for the 135th time was Pearlly Chua who gave a splendid performance as the indomitable and hard-headed Nyonya.

The Peranakan play was presented by Ombak-Ombak Arts Studio to raise funds for its community projects.
