Wawasan Open University (WOU) fêted over 90 journalists and photographers from 16 media organisations in Penang during its inaugural ‘Media Appreciation Night’ held at the main campus.

Through the event organised by Corporate Communications, WOU aimed to recognise the support extended by the editorial division of the media and to show appreciation for their coverage of WOU happenings.

The foyer of the Albukhary building splendidly transformed into a banquet hall for the night with attractive table-settings, décor and accessories, not to mention a stage complete with rostrum.

The evening came alive with the sounds and laughter of the Press when they started arriving from 7.30pm onwards and were handed goodie bags filled with WOU premium items.  The guests mingled with each other and interacted with the WOU staff over buffet dinner and the various activities.

The emcee for the function, Raja Halim Ali Akbar from the General Services and Administration Department, formally greeted the members of the media, after which Corporate Communications Manager Lim Yao-han gave a short welcome address.

WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Wong Tat Meng then presented his speech, thanking the media for their support in promoting WOU and its open distance learning mode of higher education to working adults.

He shared that the university has added 11 new programmes during the past year “to address emerging market needs”. He also briefly described the WOU facilities, the many public talks organised and the university’s contribution to the less fortunate in society as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Raja Halim then took charge of the ice-breaker game which put the Press in a frenzy as they scrambled to gather the required items to win themselves a table prize.

Over 10 members of the media sportingly took part in the impromptu karaoke singing contest, under the watchful eye of the judges, School of Foundation and Liberal Studies dean Prof Mogana Dhamotharan, Quality Assurance Manager Dr Andy Liew and Yao-han.
