Wawasan Open University, through its Centre for Professional Development and Continuing Education (PACE), conducted a 15-day Holiday English Programme for 30 school children aged 8-16 years old from Thailand.
The students from Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pattani, Hat Yai, Satun, Yala and Narathiwat in Thailand attended the Holiday English Classes held at the WOU main campus from Mondays to Fridays. They were exposed to specially-designed teaching materials for holiday programmes that aimed to improve their English language skills.
A FIELD TRIP TO THE BATIK FACTORY
Besides having loads of fun during their lessons, the children also experienced enjoyable interactive activities, such as a visit to the Batik Factory, and learning the art of food carving and how to write recipes.

“We know that children learn best when they are having fun. That’s why we designed a programme that not only helped them improve their language skills, but was enjoyable and helped build their confidence. We kept the children motivated by making sure that they were learning in a stimulating, happy and friendly environment,” said Prof Mohandas Menon, Acting Director of PACE.
A simple closing ceremony was held on the last day, with cultural dance performances by the students. WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye presented certificates of completion to all of them.

The Thai organisers of this holiday programme along with the parents of the children were very happy with the way the entire camp was organised by WOU, and were keen to establish a long-term relationship with thr university. They indicated that the activities in the camp had helped to boost the children’s fluency in English and their self-confidence.
