WOU charity clothing donation during Hari Raya

Wawasan Open University organised a charity clothing donation drive in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration this year to exemplify the spirit of ‘giving and caring’.

The in-house charity initiative hoped to improve the lives of the homeless by distributing used or recycled clothes collected from the WOU family. It is one way for the University to help the less fortunate in society.

“For this year’s Hari Raya celebration, we decided to do something different. We organised a clothing recycle programme from 26 May till 26 June, participated by WOU staff and students,” said Pn Kamsiah Mohd Ali, WOU Hari Raya celebration organising chairperson and Director of Learning & Library Services.

The unwanted clothes were collected, sorted and distributed to the poor and homeless at Jalan Kapitan Keling and Jalan Jelutong, Penang. “We also donated the clothes to people in need, the WOU cleaners and to the Orang Asli Settlement in Perak,” she elaborated, when addressing staff at the annual Hari Raya gathering arranged by the WOU Muslim community at the main campus today.

The Hall of the Homestead was festively decorated and guests, many dressed in attractive traditional Malay outfits, were greeted with gifts of multi-coloured crafted ketupat.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye, in his speech, said the gathering served to enhance the relationship of the employees. He noted that the less fortunate are never forgotten and applauded the charity clothing drive.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is regarded as a merry celebration as it marks a person’s triumph in upholding discipline and self-resistance during the holy Ramadan month of fasting.

The staff enjoyed a traditional Hari Raya lunch of nasi briyani, dalca, chicken rendang, ketupat, kuih cara and other tasty delicacies.

WOU top management who graced the event included Board of Governors Chairman Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Gajaraj Dhanarajan, Chief Administrative Officer Mr Yeong Sik Kheong and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic-ODL) Prof Madhulika Kaushik.

Our appreciation and thanks to the Muslim community at WOU for the wonderful Hari Raya charity drive and gathering.
