An academic from Wawasan Open University was among the winners at the MIMOS award ceremony held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.
Dr Tan Choo Jun, Senior Lecturer of WOU’s School of Science & Technology, was presented with the MIMOS Prestigious Award (MPA) during the National Innovation Award Night 2014.
The MPA represents MIMOS’s highest recognition of the contributions of the research community and industry to the nation’s innovation and global competitiveness. MIMOS is the National R&D Centre in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and a strategic agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

RECEIVING HIS AWARD FROM THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER.
Dr Tan received his award from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. He was honoured for his research on enhanced Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) models that can be used to tackle multi-objective optimisation problems efficiently (in terms of computational time) and effectively (in terms of systems performance). The proposed models have been published in an international conference in Japan (2013) and two high impact scientific journals in 2013 and 2014.
His research also demonstrates the capability of EA models in solving real-world problems. A total of four real-world case studies have been conducted, and they are job shop scheduling, electronic circuit parameter tuning, health informatics, and medical diagnosis problems.
In addition to the MPA, Dr Tan has received five international/national awards. He won a Bronze Medal at the Korea Cyber International Genius Inventor Fair (CIGIF) 2012; a Silver Prize at the Korea Open Source Software (OSS) World Challenge 2011; was a finalist for the MSC Malaysia-Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2010; and won the Sun Technology Award for the Open Jive Regional Challenge 2009 Malaysia Final and the Open Jive Grand Final Challenge 2009.
In winning the MIMOS award, he remarked, “It was an awesome moment for me! I thank everyone who has helped me, in one way or another, in completing my research. I would like to share this prestigious moment with everyone in USM and WOU.”
The MPA award will further inspire Dr Tan in his research. “Knowledge can only become wisdom when we fully comprehend and internalise it. This is just the beginning of my journey in research. There are lots of things to learn in this exciting journey,” he stated.
