Karen Khor Ean Teng of Wawasan Open University received the silver medal in the Young Innovator Award category at the closing ceremony of the 27th Annual Conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) in Islamabad, Pakistan today.

Her winning paper on “Student Perceptions of Using SCORM Compliant Learning Object (SCLO) for Learning in ODL Environment” examined the underlying factors and causal relationships that determine students’ behavioural intentions and actual use of Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) Compliant Learning Object as learning support to improve their learning.
“The finding revealed that SCLO was well received and extensively used by the students for various learning activities,” she said, adding that papers were evaluated on the merit of the innovation for the YIA award. She received her prize from the President of AAOU, Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye.

Karen, a course coordinator with the School of Science and Technology, also shone at the 25th International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) World Conference on Open and Distance Learning from 16-18 October 2013 in Tianjin, China. The conference was attended by over 700 participants from 40 countries.
Her joint paper on “A Framework for the Development of OER-based Learning Materials in the ODL Environment” with fellow academic Vincent Chung won the ICDE Prize for Innovation and Best Practice under the theme Open Educational Resources (OER) and intercultural aspects. “This paper discusses OER course development in open access environment by utilising OER in the construction of an ODL course,” she said.
A total of nine papers were selected by the Editorial Board of Open Praxis on the themes of OER and intercultural aspects; Learning analytics; Mobile learning; Impact; Teaching quality; and Leadership. The papers will be published in the next issue of ICDE’s peer-reviewed, open access journal, Open Praxis.

Karen was on hand to receive the prize from Prof Alan Tait, Professor of Distance Education and Development, The Open University, UK. “The ICDE award is very prestigious and competitive among the researchers as the paper selection of ICDE Prize for Innovation and Best Practice went through three rounds of anonymous reviews and the winner was selected and finalised by the Editorial Board of Open Praxis,” she added.
She said the two international triumphs have “motivated her even more in the ODL research path” and she felt it an honour that their contributions were valued by others. “As academics, we are well aware the importance of research and we will continue to work to achieve greater accomplishments. With these awards, we believe our network circles will be broadened and this allows collaboration with international research groups.”
