Wawasan Open University held a Safety, Security and Health campaign at the main campus today to raise awareness and promote a healthy lifestyle among employees.
The half-day event organised by WOU’s Safety and Security Committee kicked off with a zumba workout led by full-time student Robin Cheah Kai Yang, who incidentally is the President of the on-campus learning (OCL) student body. He is pursuing his Bachelor of Business (Hons) degree in Accounting at WOU.
Twenty-five staff dressed in their best sporting outfits participated in the 30-minute rigorous early morning zumba exercise, gamely following the energetic dance routine to Oppa Gangnam Style and other loud, lively music.
Among those seen doing the zumba were Chief Administrative Officer Yeong Sik Kheong, ITS Director Tan Pooi See and GSA Assistant Manager Sharifah Azura Syed Osman.
Next was the ‘Safety, Security and Health Exhibition’ held at the ground floor foyer of the Albukhary building to educate and enlighten staff and students. Seven exhibitors were on hand to showcase their products and answer queries.

SUBBAROW EXPLAINS ABOUT ORGANIC FARMING.
The exhibitors comprised the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), Road Safety Department of Malaysia, State Health Department’s Non-Communicable Disease Control Unit, National Cancer Society of Malaysia Penang branch, Northeast District Health Office, and two suppliers of organic plants/products.
CAP education officer N V Subbarow readily explained to the crowd about how to make organic fertiliser and non-toxic repellant for plants. The State Health Department distributed leaflets along with stick-on labels signifying ‘no-smoking’ and ‘smoke-free zone’, while the Raod Safety Department displayed safety tools and posters.
The campaign was organised by the Committee with the support of the Staff Recreational Club (SRC). It is hoped that staff and students are motivated to be more safety conscious and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
