WOU forged a new partnership with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) at the main campus on 9 April 2008 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding outlining a few areas of cooperation to further promote management accountancy in Malaysia.

The ceremony started off with speeches by WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Wong Tat Meng and CIMA Director of Education Robert Jelly to herald the collaboration and to expound on the programmes offered by their respective institutions.

Under the MoU, CIMA will award advanced standing credits to graduates of WOU’s Bachelor of Business in Accounting (Hons), whereby they will be exempted from five subjects for now when pursuing the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting.
In return, CIMA students and members who enter WOU programmes will be given advanced standing credits appropriate to their level of attainment. WOU can also register as a ‘CIMA Learning Partner’ to offer the CIMA Professional Qualification to its students. Other areas of cooperation are:
- Provide each other technical advice and assistance on all areas of joint collaboration.
- Offer CIMA 1st – initial pathway towards the studying of the CIMA programme – to WOU students from any discipline. Benefits to students who join CIMA 1st include free access to learning resources at the CIMA Malaysia office, bi-monthly newsletters containing news about CIMA, preferential rates at training courses, and membership to the CIMA Malaysia Toastmasters Club.

The MoU was signed by Jelly and Prof Wong, and witnessed by guest-of-honour Datuk Chet Singh who is also WOU Council Deputy Chairman, WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Operations) Dr. Seah Soo Aun, and CIMA Malaysian Regional Director Sopiah Suid.
