Representatives from the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) branch in Johor attended a roundtable presentation on the programmes offered by the Wawasan Open University.
The presentation at the FMM premises in Tebrau Business Park was attended by small and medium entreprise (SME) sub-committee members and staff of FMM, including the branch manager, B S Sim.
The SME sub-committee members are owners of companies involved in such diverse activities ranging from precision metal stamping, paper tube and paper canister manufacturing, tool and die fabrication, spray painting and silk screening, to material packaging.

WOU Johor Bahru Regional Office (JBRO) director Dr Ng Peng Long presented an overview of the degree progrmmes from the School of Business and Administration and the School of Science and Technology, and also of the three MBAs – the Commonwealth Executive MBA, the MBA in Construction Management, and the MBA in Manufacturing and Production Management.
The aim of the preview was to create awareness amongst the members about the opportunity available at WOU for working adults to upgrade themselves academically and professionally while working full-time.
Towards this purpose, Dr Ng talked about the open distance learning (ODL) system, the opportunity for working adults to plan their own pace of studies, and the availability of printed course modules, CD-ROM course materials, tutorial classes, and the learning management system to support learners.
During the Q&A, the attendees were happy to learn that the costs of all WOU programmes are claimable under the Human Resources Development Fund, and about the other financial assistances offered.
Dr Ng also assuaged their concerns about the university’s qualifications by highlighting that all WOU programmes are recognised and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

“We hope this is the first of many more previews with FMM Johor to promote the WOU programmes. We are trying to organise previews with the other FMM sub-committees, such as the safety and security, and the employee training and development,” stated Dr Ng.
“I have also proposed to the FMM members to help arrange for previews at their respective companies so that we can directly address any doubts or concerns their staff may have,” he added.
Earlier in July, the Penang Regional Office had organised a WOU programme preview at the FMM Penang branch in Seberang Jaya attended by representatives from two companies.
