Exploring international partnership opportunities in Laos

Wawasan Open University (WOU) recently hosted a study trip meeting with senior officials from the Laos Ministry of Education (MOE) during their visit to the main campus to explore possible collaboration opportunities.  

The three-man delegation, led by Deputy Director-General of the Department of Higher Education, Laos MOE, Mr Seng Xiongchunou, was in Malaysia on a working visit to meet with key players in the Malaysian higher education landscape.

The delegation, which also comprised the Deputy Head of the Department of Higher Education, Mr Sengkeo Vongsakit and Lecturer at the National University of Laos, Mr Thavy Phimminity, were met on arrival by the Wawasan Education Foundation Board Chairman, Dato’ Seri Stephen Yeap, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Wong Tat Meng and Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye (Academic) and Dr Seah Soo Aun (Operations).

They engaged in a lively exchange of ideas ranging from the educational and economic landscape in both countries to the 

specific offerings of WOU and how it can assist in the development of Laos’ economy. To give the visitors a better understanding of the university, Prof Wong then delivered an in-depth presentation on the university’s vision, mission, programmes, its unique open distance learning model and notable milestones.

Joining them at the session were Registrar Mr Yeong Sik Keong, Director of Regional Operations Mr Chong Kong Hoong and Information Technology Services Manager Mr Tan Pooi See. Also present at the meeting were representatives from Optical Communication Engineering (OCE) Sdn Bhd – CEO Dato’ Robin Wong and Business Development & Regulatory Advisor (Asean Region) Mr Michael Wong.

The visitors were also given a hands-on demonstration on WOU’s learning management system, WawasanLearn, and online digital library by staff from the Learning & Library Services and Educational Technology & Publishing departments respectively. They were also taken on a tour of the Homestead and main campus facilities before leaving for a brief visit to the WOU regional office in Ipoh.
