Climate change is now urgent. In order to make a difference, both technology, funding and management skills should be made available to communities, start-ups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), who are at the forefront of climate action.
Universities play an integral role in educating, generating research findings, producing compassionate and ethical global citizens, and equipping learners with technological competencies for the digital world.
The editors of the book, “Fit for Purpose? The Futures of Universities”, shared highlights and their thoughts during the special launch of the publication at the WOU City Campus on 28 January 2023.

WOU’s new School of Digital Technology (DiGiT) has gained traction and recognition in the Top in Tech Innovation Awards 2022 for its unique work-study model offered to students.
WOU kick-started the new academic year by welcoming its on-campus learning (OCL) students in the January 2023 intake to the beautiful seaside main campus in Penang.
Eighteen freshmen attended the half-day orientation event conducted by the Penang Regional Centre (PGRC) on 6 January 2023. They comprised 12 from the business diploma and business degree programmes, three from Bachelor of Digital Business (Honours), and three from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology programme.
In the shift to a learner-centric approach, educators are often faced with the challenges of understanding the learner’s needs and establishing where they are in their learning journey.
To address this, Prof Séamus Ó Tuama, Director of Adult Continuing Education (ACE), University College Cork (UCC) Ireland and Chair of ASEM Lifelong Learning Hub, shared his thoughts on ‘Shaping a Learner-Centred Approach: Reflexivity and Capitals of Learning’ with academics at the WOU City Campus on 12 December 2022.
The passion for volunteerism and philanthropic spirit is alive and well within the WOU learning community. The University has been supporting since 2007 the Relay for Life Penang event that seeks to promote cancer awareness, celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who lost their lives to the disease.
As with any graduates, Deanmozhi Seetha Pathi was looking forward to celebrating her achievement with her family on her convocation day on 27 November 2022. What was supposed to be a memorable trip to Penang turned out to be a bittersweet one as her father unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack in June this year.
