The campus comes to you

In Open Distance Learning, as the term implies, you learn from a distance. There may be a physical separation between the teacher and you, but our associate lecturers have a new role. They meet you for selected tasks such as counselling, giving tutorials or solving your learner-related problems.

In the traditional system of education, the teacher communicates content by word of mouth. In distance education, on the other hand, content is transmitted to you electronically, over the telephone and by teleconferencing as well as through pod casting, on-line communication and traditional print material.

Take one course, several courses or take a break

Open distance learning appeals to a wider audience because it is more accessible and affordable.

You do not have to quit your present job. Our programmes allow you to continue your education without disrupting your family, social and work obligations. You may complete our courses at your own pace and convenience.

Our flexible programmes cater for working adults and others who are unable to study on-campus or go on extended study leave. You may study for a single course without committing yourself further. Alternatively, you may take several courses one after the other until you have obtained a qualification. You may even take a break between courses if you need to.

It doesn’t matter where you live either. Geographical location is no longer a barrier. So, if you live in a remote area or are unable to attend classes regularly, you can still realise your dreams. You can study at home, attend tutorials at nearby regional offices, and e-mail, instant message or phone our tutors for assistance.

Why our qualifications are valued

Employers today prefer their employees to upgrade themselves with higher levels of qualification. Open distance learning helps you obtain the qualifications you need to succeed in your career.

Studying online requires real commitment and an independent spirit. Employers are quick to recognise these values in those who are determined enough to advance through open distance learning.

Open distance learners tend to be motivated self-starters with the ability to follow-through assignments to completion and to adapt to dynamic environments. They thrive on challenges. They are also goal-oriented individuals who see education as an ongoing, lifelong process, both online and at the workplace.

Employers know that these learners can perform effectively in any environment that requires multi-tasking and setting priorities. That is because the majority of these learners are working adults who have successfully juggled their careers, their studies, and their family responsibilities. They know how to prioritise their tasks.

Not surprisingly, research indicates that open distance learners are open-minded, flexible about workplace demands, and willing to adapt to tomorrow's technology. (Chronicle of Higher Education,
