Study Skills @ WOU
To give you a head start on your learning journey with us, we would like to invite you to explore some of the study skills necessary for student life at WOU. It is important to your success as an open distance learner to make sure that you are equipped adequately for your studies and we will be providing some general advice and guidance, as well as sharing some insights into what it means to be a distance learner. The useful hints and tips will help you make the most of your experience here at WOU.
At WOU, we practise open distance learning which is a mode of education and instruction that involves studying in a non-traditional classroom setting without being physically present most of the time. Our students communicate with tutors and course coordinators via e-mail, electronic forums, video-conferencing, instant messaging and other computer-based communication. It gives you the opportunity of studying for a degree from a recognised university without compulsory attendance (though our students are strongly encouraged to attend tutorials once a month). The degree allows you more flexibility and on the whole is more economical. It allows you to study amidst your personal, family and/or professional obligations that would, under normal circumstances, prevent you from attending a university.
