Looming clouds did not deter some 200 staff and students of Wawasan Open University and DISTED College along with family members from turning up for the joint Family Day at the Penang Youth Park today.
The event themed ‘Superheroes’ organised by WOU this year saw an exciting change as it was held for the very first time outside the premises of both institutions. The Youth Park lent a festive, soothing atmosphere to the whole gathering.
Quite a number were donning t-shirts of their favourite superhero characters. In fact, the entire team from WOU’s Educational Technology & Publishing unit came dressed in black t-shirts of Captain America, while others showed off the ‘S’ of Superman, as well as the recognisable logos of Spiderman, Batman and Catwoman.
The event started with a zumba workout session. Among those seen gamely trying to keep in step with the instructor were Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye and Chief Operating Officer Yeong Sik Kheong.
Prof Ho and Paul Seah, Head of DISTED’s Centre for Continuing Professional Development, launched the event by each releasing a confetti-filled cylinder which spewed confetti onto the stage.
Next came the colouring contest participated by about 20 children aged 6 to 12 years, while others divided themselves into 10 groups to take part in the games.
The five games held on the field were: Super Shake (shaking off ping pong balls from a box tied behind their waist), Infinity Stone Cargo (walking with ping pong ball on spoon), Atlantis in Peril (squeezing water off cloth onto bottle), Target Practice (knocking down cans with ball) and Flash’s Race Against Time (1 minute to complete 5 activities, i.e. linking hangers, assembling jigsaw pieces, keeping 2 balloons afloat, stacking cups, and flipping ping pong onto cups). The top three winners received hampers.
Everyone feasted on a bountiful spread of foods like spaghetti, vegetarian bee hoon, roti jala, egg and tuna sandwich, as well as barbeque grilled chicken, fish, corn and vegetables. There were desserts of cupcakes, mini cheese tarts, cream puff, popcorn and puddings, and drinks like teh tarik and milo.
Following a dance performance from a DISTED student, the much anticipated lucky draw gave away a total of 58 prizes, including the first prize of a Pensonic Air Fryer, second a rice cooker, third a juice extractor, and many shopping vouchers and goodie bags of varying value.
Among the attendees were WOU Sdn Bhd Chairman Dato’ Seri Stephen Yeap; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Madhulika Kaushik, Registrar Dr Andy Liew Teik Kooi, and Head of Human Resources, Surrayya Shuib, from WOU; and DISTED President Dr Seah Soo Aun.
