(7-8 June 2010)
Two academics from the School of Education, Languages and Communications (SELC) represented Wawasan Open University (WOU) at the 19th MELTA International Conference held in Kuala Lumpur.
WOU was one of the main sponsors of the conference hosted by the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) at three different locations - Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan and Kuching. The conference themed ‘Transformations in English Language Education: Vision, Innovation, Implementation’ was attended by teachers, educators, administrators and others involved in the teaching of the English Language.
SELC dean Prof Malachi Edwin Vethamani, an invited plenary speaker for the KL session, delivered a paper entitled, ‘Transformations in ELT: Incorporating the Green Dimension’. He was also a panelist for the closing forum on ‘To Go or Not to Go Native: The Role of Native Speaker Teachers and Trainers in Second and Foreign Language Teaching’.
SELC senior lecturer Noor Azliza Zainal Abidin presented a demonstration on ‘Interactive Games Are Powerful Learning Tools’. The participants were drawn to the idea that they could develop games even through the PowerPoint programme.
SELC also showcased an interactive CD which was developed to help Malaysian English language teachers teach the new literary texts in the KBSM syllabus. Prof Edwin and WOU student Justine Jesunathan demonstrated the use of this CD by introducing teachers to a set of interactive learning materials that have been developed to teach Form 1 and Form 4 students.
