Wawasan Open University participated for the fifth consecutive year as a gold sponsor of Relay for Life Penang 2011.
A 10-member team led by Deputy Registrar Sovindar Kaur and Human Resources Director Shirley Khoo represented the University at the event’s official opening held at the Youth Park.
The members proudly held WOU banners and placards as they joined representatives from other groups and organisations around the field to promote cancer awareness.
The 16-hour relay kicked off following the launch with the customary opening lap by the cancer survivors, or ‘heroes’.
The key message for the event was that there was no ‘finish line’ until a cure for cancer is found.
Among the activities lined up were the lighting of the luminaria, face painting, jumble sale, henna design, line dancing, free health screening, aerobics and games.
The relay serves to bring together people from all over Penang to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who have lost loved ones and to join in the fight against cancer.
Earlier on September 8th, there was a mock cheque presentation by all major sponsors, with Senior Executive Teoh Soo Ling (Marcom) standing in for WOU.
The University, in line with its commitment to corporate social responsibility, lends its support to this annual event organised by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia Penang Branch and Penang Hospice Society.
