The government has declared October 10th of every year to be celebrated as National Sports Day in an effort to inculcate a culture of sports and promote a healthy lifestyle, while helping to make Malaysia a sporting nation.

The main campus grounds of WOU became a hive of activity as players turned up for a volleyball competition that promised loads of exercise, fun and laughter. It saw 32 players - comprising 20 staff and 12 full-time students - from four teams vying to beat their opponents and win the competition.

The tournament was organised by Kevin Tan Pooi Soo, Lecturer from the School of Science & Technology (SST), in collaboration with WOU’s Staff Recreational Club (SRC).

After sweating it out over several tiring matches, the team from the Educational Technology & Publishing (ETP) Unit emerged as the champion while runner-up were the staff from the General Services & Administration (GSA) Department.

Congratulations to the winning teams and a big thank you to all participants for making this event a success. Let us make next year’s sporting activity an even grander affair. I hope to see a lot more participation from the staff and our full-time students,” remarked Kevin.

“Our purpose in holding this game is not so much about winning or scouting for the best players. Games like these are to encourage people to have some good, wholesome outdoor fun. They also help to foster closer ties among staff and students, and let them feel connected and be part of the WOU family,” he added.

The University is indeed proud to be part of this healthy initiative mooted by the government towards building a healthy nation through sporting activities
