Programme Outline

This programme is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to obtain professional qualifications in education and to upgrade the quality of services in educational institutions. To meet these needs, the programme will cover core education topics as well as four strands of specialisation as below:

1. Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
2. Education Management
3. E-Learning [from January 2019]
4. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) [from July 2019]

By providing the latest knowledge in information technology tools, research in education, leadership skills, education theories and key sustainable development issues, this programme provides relevant knowledge and practical skills that can be applied immediately to language classroom situations, education management and administrative settings, digital learning environment as well as participatory teaching and learning methods in sustainable development.

  • Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Specialisation

Teaching English as a Second Language is a high-demand specialisation that continues to experience growth. It provides students with a world of opportunities. The size and scope of the industry allows students to teach almost anywhere in the world. This specialisation introduces the essential learning theories and practices needed to be a TESL instructor. It covers the activities and exercises that increase student comprehension of the English language.

  • Education Management Specialisation

This specialisation enhances students’ understanding of leadership and management theories and practice across the education sectors and systems. Students learn how to integrate practical knowledge, conceptual frameworks and state-of-the-art research with a global perspective.

  • E-Learning Specialisation [from January 2019]

This specialisation provides students with the framework needed for teaching and learning in the 21st century, focusing on designing and implementing educational technology in formal and informal learning environments. New approaches and technologies for incorporating media into e-learning instruction are introduced to ensure high level of engagement and new level of interactivity.

  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) [from July 2019]

While economic policies, industries, engineering research and development, technological research and development are imminent for ‘Sustainable Development Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all’, it is equally significant that ‘education’ plays the role in supporting progress towards SDG 7. It is education and learning that motivate and empower common citizens, households and young generation to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development. This promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Master of Education will qualify for appointment as teachers in schools as well as in academic and administrative positions in colleges, university colleges and universities. They may also find employment in publishing firms and corporate training centres.  Graduates can also be employed as researchers at institutions of higher learning.

Entry Requirements

(1) Regular Entry

  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of at least 2.5; OR

  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of less than 2.5 with a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field; OR

  • Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian Government and approved by the Senate of the University

(2) Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) provides an opportunity for individuals with working experience but lacking formal academic qualifications to pursue their tertiary studies.  APEL involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, for access to a programme of study.

Applicants should comply with the following admission criteria stipulated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA):

  • The candidate should be at least 30 years of age in the year of application and possess at least STPM / Diploma / equivalent (e.g. foundation) with relevant work experience.
