What is ODL?

ODL is a system of education in which education is imparted to learners who may not be physically present on campus.

Its philosophy is to remove barriers to education and allow learners to study according to their time, pace and place. ODL also uses technology to mediate learning.
 
 
What is the difference between ODL and studying in a conventional education system?

In a conventional education system, learners need to attend daily lectures and be present in the campus. Therefore, for a working adult learner, this system will be difficult for them to study and work at the same time. However, in ODL, learners can work and further their education at the same time. Learners are also not required to travel for classes everyday.
 
 
How does ODL support the learning process of a student?

Tutorial Support Services
Under the ODL mode of study, learners need not attend daily lectures. However, in a semester, learners are required to meet with their appointed qualified tutors over several weekends. These tutors facilitate the learning process and assist learners to have a better understanding of their courses.

Course Materials
Learners will be provided with a set of comprehensive course materials to support learning and are expected to engage in self-learning.

Learning Management System (LMS)

Learners will also be supported by WawasanLearn, a Learning Management System designed as a platform to allow students, tutors and administrators to input information for learning, supporting and keeping track of the learning process. The system is commonly used for uploading course content, course updates, important announcements, etc.
 
 
How are Open University degrees regarded by employers? Are the degrees awarded considered 2nd class compared to those from traditional or conventional Universities?
