Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin bin Haji Abdullah has been Chancellor of Wawasan Open University since December 2013. He is the former Chief Justice of Malaysia.
Tun Dzaiddin was born in Arau, Perlis and educated in Kedah. He was called to the English Bar in 1966 and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1967. He was a practicing lawyer for 16 years before his elevation to the Bench. In 1981 he was elected as Vice President of the Malaysian Bar. He was appointed the 9th Chief Justice of Malaysia in 2000.
He has been an active member of ASEAN Law Association (ALA) of Malaysia since its inception. He was elected Chairman of ALA Malaysia in 1994. In 1996, he was elected President of the ASEAN Law Association. He stepped down with the reconvening of the ALA General Assembly in December 2003. He is a former Chairman of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police (2004-2005).
Currently, he is a Consultant at SKRINE; Chairman of the Tun Mohamed Suffian Foundation; non-Executive Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Bhd; non-Executive Chairman of Deutsche Bank (Malaysia) Bhd; President of the Malaysia Middle Temple Alumni Association; and Chairman of Advisory Council of the Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS).
For his services to the country, he has been conferred several Federal and State awards, the most prestigious being the Seri Setia Mahkota Malaysia (SSM) award which carries the title ‘Tun’ in 2001. He was bestowed the Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) award which carries the title ‘Tan Sri’ in June 2000. Both were conferred by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
As for state awards, in 2000 he received Darjah Seri Paduka Cura Si Manja Kini (SPCM) from the Sultan of Perak which carries the title ‘Dato’ Seri’, and in 2012 he received the Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Perlis (SPMP) which also carries the title ‘Dato’ Seri’ from the Raja of Perlis.
In addition, he was bestowed the Darjah Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Perlis (DPMP) and Darjah Dato’ Panglima Sirajuddin Jamalullail (DPSJ) awards which carry the title ‘Dato’ by the Raja of Perlis. For his services to the State of Penang, he received the Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negeri (DMPN) which carries the title ‘Dato’ from the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri in 1987.
For his contribution towards the development of ASEAN Laws and leadership in promoting close relations and regional cooperation among members of ALA, he was conferred an honorary degree of LLD (cum laude) by the distinguished St Beda College of Law, Manila in 2001.
