ACADEMIC POSITIONS

DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR (ACADEMIC)

The post of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) is a senior position reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor and    the incumbent is a member of the University’s Senior Management Team.

Interested parties who meet the appointment criteria are invited to apply. Nominations will also be considered. All applications / nominations should reach the Director, Human Resource by 12 April 2010. The University reserves the right to fill the post through invitation.

Requirements

·         Applicants should possess an earned PhD degree with at least 20 years working experience in higher education. The candidate should be carrying the title of a full professor, with a proven track record of excellence in academic and administrative leadership at senior levels. Experience of open and distance learning systems would be an advantage as would a high level of oral and written language competence (English and Bahasa Malaysia*).

·          Evidence of demonstrated ability to lead and oversee the development of the Schools and to enhance their excellence in teaching and scholarship.

·          A proven record of leadership in research and an established record of scholarly publications in local and international journals.

·          A record of establishing mutually beneficial links with the community and the industries.

The Job

  • Responsible to the Vice Chancellor for resource planning, budgets and allocations.
  • Provide effective leadership and direction to the Schools and Registry.
  • Oversee the implementation of programmes and projects to meet the objectives of the annual and medium-term plans of the University.
  • Provide oversight on the implementation of the University’s Quality Assurance and ensure that the quality of all programmes and academic activities comply with that of local and international benchmarks.
  • Promote excellence in learning and teaching through the implementation of effective and efficient policies and procedures to enhance the quality of education, supervision and training received by the students.
  • Facilitate the setting and achievement of student admission targets within each School.
  • Promote and facilitate the development of interdisciplinary centres and other initiatives not confined to a single academic discipline or a single School.
  • Promote and support a sound working partnership between academic and support staff.
  • Develop appropriate external partnerships and alliances.

The Job

  • Reporting to the Vice Chancellor via the Dean of the School, the appointee is tasked with providing leadership in the development of new academic programmes.
  • Provide leadership in the creation and development of ODL materials for undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses.
  • Coordinate the delivery of courses in the prescribed fields within the School.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, management and evaluation of part-time tutors.
  • Maintain close liaison with external examiners, course writers and course assessors.
  • Maintain close working relationship with other support units such as Registry, Library, Educational Technology & Publishing.

NON-ACADEMIC POSITIONS

Director, Marketing & Communications

Reporting to Deputy Vice Chancellor, Operations and as a key member of Wawasan Open University’s (WOU) management team, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing marketing and communications strategies to achieve overall organizational goals and objectives.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develops the University’s marketing and communications plan, in line with the University’s strategic and business plan.
  • Develops and recommends an annual plan and budget for the Marketing and Communications department.
  • Directs market research activities in order to keep abreast of changing demographics and other relevant issues.
  • Promotes study opportunities through the proper use of marketing materials, including advertising and promotions, online and digital marketing, roadshows, conferences, and direct marketing efforts. 
  • Coordinates the design and development of print (brochures, posters, marketing point of sales, etc.) and broadcast (advertorial, advertisements, etc.) materials.
  • Develops CRM strategies for student retention and updates the CRM database and produces regular reports.  This includes managing the University’s Customer Service Unit and Call Centre.  
  • Develops and implements communications and media strategies that successfully deliver information and key messages to the public.
  • Reaches out to students, alumni, media and various sectors of community, through two-way communication and understanding between the University, its customers and the community at large.
  • Responsible for external and internal communication (University’s web page and staff portal) and publicity strategies.
  • Develops alumni relationship and support through the alumni link programme.
  • Responsible for publication of both print and e-newsletter, write-ups and speeches, and organisation of relevant marketing and communication events.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • University graduate in business, marketing, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training and expertise. A postgraduate qualification, such as an MBA, would be advantageous.
  • Possess a minimum of ten years combined senior management and communications experience in an organization involving a significant number of people with diverse and varied interests and backgrounds.
  • Experience must include strategic planning, communications planning and management, marketing and media relations.
  • Strong communicator with excellent written, presentation, oral communications and interpersonal skills. 
  • Able to think creatively and strategically, has excellent judgment and be able to work in a changing environment.
  • Possess strong leadership skills, be able to motivate and influence others.

 

Senior Course Designer / Instructional Designer

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in ICT, Computer Science, Electronics and/or Education.
  • A Master's degree in these fields or in education [Instructional Design] will be preferred.
  • Good command of English language [Distinction in English 1119] would be a distinct advantage.
  • Skills in Flash applications are also considered.

The Job

  • Convert raw materials into instructionally sound course materials in print and web-based modes.
  • Train course writers to write in conformance with the house style.

 

Educational Technology & Publishing Executive

Requirements

  • Basic Degree in English / Publishing / Instructional Design / Business.
  • Minimum 3 years working experience.
  • Good command of English language [Distinction in English 1119] would be a distinct advantage.
  • Strong in Technical subjects [Computing].

The Job

  • Instruction Designer, Editorial plus attend to LMS and Videography.


Database Administrator

Requirements

  • University degree/equivalent in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • At least 2 years experience in Database Administrator role on both Linux and Windows’ platforms, MySQL and MSSQL server databases. Additional experience in Oracle would be an added advantage.
  • With strong analytical & programming skill with at least 2 years experience in Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) design and analysis experience.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work in odd hours if needs arise.
  • Minimum 3 years working experience.
  • Good understanding of system, server, storage and database technologies especially in the areas of high availability, clustering, failover and disaster discovery.
  • Strong in technical background with good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skill, able to work independently with minimum supervision.

The Job

  • Assist in building and implementing University’s Data Warehouse to support business needs on management reporting.
  • Assist in building and implementing University’s Data Warehouse to support business needs on management reporting.
  • Duties also include 24x7 on-call support and disaster recovery support as and when necessary.
  • Provide support to production databases including installations, upgrades, update patches and fixed when necessary, tuning, backup/recovery, health checks & monitoring, etc.
  • Proactively address potential issues such as performance degradation, reliability and security breach.
  • Provide Systems Administration support in the deployment and support of a multi-platform installation.
  • Assist Operations and Application Development in the deployment, and support of web-based and client server implementations.

 

Senior Infrastructure Engineer (System & Network Engineers)

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in a computer related field or the equivalent skill knowledge. MCSE/SA, CCNA certifications will be advantages.
  • At least 4 years working experience with IT infrastructure management.
  • Possess strong technical skills in setting-up and managing Windows 2003, Netware, Linux, & Unix Servers, LDAP, Active Directory and e-Directory.
  • Strong experience in managing associated application & services like, DNS, DHCP, SYSLOG, FTP server, File/Print servers. Previous experience with Novell Groupwise, MSExchange,MDaemon, and Qmail is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with CISCO switches, routers, wireless LAN, VPN, security devices, Link & Server balancers.
  • Possessed good documentation practice that ensures good quality project planning/implementation/operations.
  • A team player that is able to work independently and under pressure. Excellent communication, interpersonal and trouble shooting skills.

The Job

  • Configure and administer the Window 2003, Netware, Linux, & Unix Platform.
  • Configure and manage LDAP, Active Directory & e-Directory.
  • Responsible for Active Directory, e-Directory and LDAP Directory support, monitoring, administering user clients 9add, modify, delete users0 and maintenance.
  • Configure and administer associated application & services.
  • Perform system backup, security and data backup.
  • Monitor physical server and operating system, which include rectifying of issues.
  • Carry out OS Security Patching (Client & Server) & Testing.
  • Responsible for vendor management, liaising with SI on problem rectification and forward planning.
  • Administer LAN/WAN networking/data communication technologies such as CISCO switches, routers, wireless LAN, VPN, Security devices, Link and Server balancers, etc.
  • Responsible for performance monitoring, optimization, capacity planning, and infrastructure security.

 

Application Developer (Analyst Programmer)

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in a computer related field or equivalent skill and knowledge. Other qualifications: MCSD, MCAD, Linux/MYSQL/PHP certifications is desirable. In additional, experience with Enterprise Systems support and Library Information Systems program integration is an added advantage.
  • At least 4 years of software development expertise in Window and/or Linux platforms.
  • Experience with multi-tier application, database & web development systems integration.
  • Demonstrated excellence in problem analysis and problem solving. Experience with object-oriented design and development concepts. Extensive knowledge of software development tools and techniques.
  • Programming experience with VB.NET and ASP.NET, MS-Access & MSSQL Server and/or PHP & MYSQL; working knowledge of Oracle database, Pearl and Java programming.
  • A team player that is able to work independently and under pressure. Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.

 The Job

  • Focus is on the delivery of information technology solutions for new and changing university’s processes.
  • Requirement Definition: Participate in requirements definition at the program, process and system levels. Transform requirements into system, process and program designs. Requirements may be for custom development or adaptation of third party or packaged application software.
  • Design : Design new programs and integrate processes. Design may be custom or involve adaptation of or integration to third party packaged applications software. Design activities may involve assessing package software and evaluating configuration options of the application against university’s requirement.
  • Quality Management : Ensure the quality of developed and delivered IT capabilities. Coordinate and execute systems testing. Ensure proper change control procedures are followed. Evaluate system integration impacts beyond the scope of specified change.
  • Maintenance, Enhancement and Support : Provide support as necessary to existing suite of applications within a functional area. Solve software problems in a timely fashion. Provide support to user on technical and process.

 


Marketing & Admission Executives/Officers (Kuching)

Requirements

  • Degree/Diploma or the equivalent in Business Studies, Mass Communications with minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Able to work on weekends.

The Job

  • Support and maintain admission, examination and students records.
  • Responsible for all aspects relating to the marketing of the University and its programmes.
  • Develop marketing plans, potential student database and handle all enquiries.
  • Assist in counselling and provide guidance on enquiries on advance standing.

 

Assistant Manager / Sr. Executive (Events Management)

Requirements

  • Degree in Business Administration / Hospitality Management
  • Minimum 3 years in Events Management 
  • Computer literate
  • Good communication skill at all level
  • Mature personality with passion in sales, dynamic and result oriented
  • Highly motivated, responsible, committed and able to work independently

  • To market the University’s facilities such as Theatres, Seminar Rooms, Dinning Hall, Open Garden Terrace, Function Room and other facilities.

The Job

  • To perform general maintenance in the University’s premises (internal & external buildings)
  • To carry out all building related services such as checking, inspecting, maintaining, upkeep, air-con, plumbing, sanitary, lightings, telecommunications (PABX), CCTV, building structures and all other related services (M & E)
  • Conduct regular and preventive checks on all equipments and machineries in the University to ensure that they are in good condition.
