The crest and its elements
A titanium torch, a symbol of modernity, and sincere
guidance for all constitutes the core of the WOU crest.
Cast onto the torch are two palm fronds representing
Penang, the island on which WOU was established. The fronds frame the words
“For the people”.
The flames on the torch make out the abstract shape of a
person reaching high while holding the hand of another person, also reaching
high. This enforces the nickname “The People’s University” and proposes
communal betterment through education. The letter “W” is also apparent
within the flames.
Behind this torch is an open book, representing learning
and accessibility. The text in the book is stylised to bring forth the
effect of contemporary graphics and clarity, forming clear-cut bold lines.
These elements are held in unity by an elegant silver shield.
Engraved on the bottom half of the shield are two golden rice stalks,
symbolising WOU’s vision of bringing prosperity to the people through
education. The stalks are also a referential tribute to Parti Gerakan Rakyat
Malaysia, to which WOU owes it creation.
At the top of the shield is a lobe, with the corporate logo on it.
