Ishan Abeywardena is a Senior Lecturer in IT at the School of
Science and Technology at Wawasan Open University (WOU), Penang,
Malaysia. He received his first MSc in Wireless Enterprise
Business Systems and his second MSc in Engineering Management
from Brunel University, UK. Ishan also studied Applied
Simulation in Robotics at a post graduate level at Dortmund
University, Germany and holds a BSc in Computer Science from
Bangalore University, India. He is currently pursuing his PhD in
Computer Science specialising in text mining algorithms at
University of Malaya, Malaysia. Ishan is a professional member
of the British Computer Society (MBCS), Institution of
Engineering and Technology (MIET) and IEEE (MIEEE). He is also a
Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA). Having been in the
software/technology industry prior to joining WOU, Ishan’s
industry experience comes mostly from UK and Sri Lanka in
software development, web development, e-commerce, project
management, operations and R&D. He has served in managerial and
directorial positions prior to joining academia. Among his many
achievements, Ishan won the best research paper award thrice
consecutively at the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU)
annual conference in 2010 (Hanoi), 2011 (Penang) and 2012
(Chiba). He was also the runner-up of both the UK Bright Ideas
and UK Make A Difference (MAD) Ideas technology innovation
competitions for the year 2008. In addition to his academic
duties, Ishan served an Executive Secondment at the Commonwealth
of Learning, Vancouver, Canada in 2012; served as the secretary
to the board of advisers of OERAsia (http://www.oerasia.org) and
as a secretariat member/webmaster of the AAOU (http://www.aaou.net).
In his spare time Ishan reads Sci-Fi novels (favourite author is
Michael Crichton), composes poetry, codes intelligent algorithms
and keeps monster fish. His latest hobby is RC Helicopters.
